A Little Apocalyptica

March 25, 2019 by James Young 1 Comment

For those not familiar with Apocalyptica, feel free to read more about cellos and heavy metal here. So on their song “Deathzone,” there was a hidden track entitled “En Vie”: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR-8Enw4z_A?start=41&w=560&h=315] People liked it so much, they decided to produce an English version: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwjeKFbw760?start=41&w=560&h=315] It’s a haunting tune about how even someone who […]

Music Monday

March 18, 2019 by James Young Leave a Comment

So every third Monday we’re going to mix things up and go with a song from a movie score rather than the traditional “Metal Monday.”  So without further ado, a classic: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk-j4tIxFLs?start=41&w=560&h=315] Perfect for those times when you absolutely, positively need to build the mood for mayhem.

When Times Are Hard

March 11, 2019 by James Young 2 Comments

Every character goes through struggles.  Sometimes there’s a song that speaks to this process.  Without further ado, Iced Earth… [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vz4yIgnFt0?start=41&w=560&h=315] I will say Iced Earth is an interesting band.  As folks who regularly peruse this feature may note, they’ve changed their lead singers a few times.  Definitely a story of persevering through different events.

Metal Monday Returns!

March 4, 2019 by James Young Leave a Comment

*coughs on dust*  So it’s funny going back and finding the number of times I’ve tried to update the “Metal Monday” program.  I will say, in the dark ages of trying to get things done, that became one of the “things that could go away.” So we’re going to try and do this again.  😀  […]

Metal Monday: Minutes Seem Like Days

June 19, 2017 by James Young Leave a Comment

As previously mentioned on this blog, I have a post-Apocalyptic universe.  Despite using asteroids for mine, I grew up in the ’80s when nukes were a big deal.  Like many a child of the Cold War, I dealt with the constant discussion that eventually the United States and Soviet Union were going to stumble into […]

Metal Monday To the Extreme

June 12, 2017 by James Young Leave a Comment

So, back in the midst of the 1990s hair band frenzy was a crossover hit by Extreme.  Twenty-five (!) years on, I still think it’s a pretty good song: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS85DbQ3VVQ&w=560&h=315]

Metal Monday–I. Am. The. Water God

April 24, 2017 by James Young Leave a Comment

Today we have a double feature.  I present to you, Dethklok…(cartoon violence in spades…don’t say you weren’t warned): [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I53HDr0-Qew&w=560&h=315]   “Wait…wait…DID I JUST WATCH BATMAN MURDER THE LITTLE MERMAID?!”  Yes, yes you did (or saw this and decided not to click on the YouTube). Unbeknownst to me, there’s a sequel song.  Which is perhaps […]

Metal Monday–Primal Fear Throws Armageddon

February 20, 2017 by James Young Leave a Comment

There definitely seems to be no shortage of metal songs about Armageddon, the end of the world, etc.  This week’s Metal Monday selection is Primal Fear’s take on the subject.  Oh the video production values… [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qhM9T3mxgE&w=560&h=315]

Metal Monday–We Are the Fallen

February 13, 2017 by James Young Leave a Comment

We all know a good band that, to use the euphemism, “Went in different creative directions…”  Fans of Evanescence may remember just such an event splintered the group when Ben Moody punched out mid-tour.  Without picking a side in that fight, I’ll simply point out that today’s Metal Monday group was the offshoot of that particular […]

Metal Monday–Lacuna Coil

February 6, 2017 by James Young Leave a Comment

Today’s “Metal Monday” group hails from Milan, Italy.  Lacuna Coil’s a pretty big deal in Europe, not so much here in the States.  Which is a shame, as they’re a really good group with a long back catalog. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6Oucn2GSpE&w=560&h=315] The better half  (whose “bare bones” blog is now here) and I have a long-standing […]

Metal Monday–When You Bait A Trap With Genocide

November 7, 2016 by James Young Leave a Comment

It’s Nano, so this will be brief.  A Little Iced Earth action to start the week.  Some background here and here. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM4CDLmDx_Y&w=560&h=315]

Metal Monday–"When Two Worlds Collide"

October 31, 2016 by James Young Leave a Comment

I’ve mentioned it in interviews, but I’m a huge fan of When Worlds Collide and After Worlds Collide.  Apparently, judging from the lyrics, so is Iron Maiden.   [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOjhkEmEmUI&w=560&h=315]   If there’s ever an old sci-fi movie I want to see redone with modern technology, it’s this one.  But only if they get someone competent to […]
